The FA Youth Coaching Award
Where should I start if I want to become a football (soccer) coach/manager?
Lately, coaching a football (soccer) club has greatly piqued my interest. I've followed soccer for many years (I'm 17 now) and I've grown an interest to coach. I researched the internet but I only got as far as finding out that the FA offers courses. Low and behold, I live in the U.S. and moving or visiting England for an extended time is not in my future plans.
I was wondering, if possibly there were any college/university courses I can take that will help me in this field. I plan to attend college/university beginning in the Fall 2009 semester. Any type of helped will be greatly appreciated.
Hey...wow your job sounds really interesting...good choice!
I'd do try to obtain a qualification from university, probably a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physical Education and Sport and Bachelor of Business/Management Studies conjoint. A conjoint degree seems to be appropriate for you as it offers more flexibility and experience.
Other pathways which you could consider to be a soccer coach/manager:
Volunteer to be a soccer coach assistant, have a soccer coach take you under his/her wing, and learn the basics of being a coach from him/her.
Read books and attend any available seminars on how to be a successful soccer coach, participate in leadership roles such as president of a club, peer support leader, etc, in your community.
Once you're sure you know how to be a soccer coach, start recruiting your team. The most important factor is passion for soccer, and show an enthusiasm towards teaching.
You could try studying the following at college/university:
Bachelor of Science major in sport and health
Management Studies/Psychology/Teaching
Experience is essential, so don't be afraid to do some volunteering work at sporting venues, or volunteer to be a soccer coach assistant.
I know a guy who only completed a diploma in sport but he became a tennis coach. So it's not always about the qualifications you have, it's also about your attitude, how much you want something. If you put your mind to it, don't ever give up.
