Techniques and Strategies to Solve a Sudoku

At the moment Sudoku is the most popular and addictive puzzling game in the world.
You can find Sudokus in newspapers, magazines, on the Internet, on your mobile, and the latest hype: at Playstation.
The main reason is that you do not need words, like in crossword puzzles, but numbers to solve a Sudoku puzzle.
The numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. are internationally accepted.

These numbers only have a symbolic meaning: you also can play Sudoku with other different symbols like pictures, drawings, punctuations marks and letters.
When a Sudoku is played with different letters such a Sudoku is called a Wordoku or Alphadoku. In most Wordokus the different letters form a meaningful word.

A well-constructed Sudoku teases and stimulates your brain to solve the puzzle. It is well known that playing brain-teasing puzzles keeps your brain active and in shape, although there is no prove that this can prevent or retard the Alzheimer disease, as is suggested.

Sudoku puzzles can be of great help for this brain stimulation because this kind of puzzle needs, as mentioned before, pure logic and good reasoning to be solved.
A Sudoku puzzle has various difficulty levels as an extra stimulus.

Therefore, if you want to keep on encouraging brain stimulation try to solve puzzles like Sudoku too.

All the knowledge in this respect you have to have is:
1. To know what is the natural sequence of the numbers 1 through 9 is: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9;
2. To know what a randomly sequence of these 9 numbers is, e.g.: 4, 6, 2, 9, 1, 5, 8, 3, 7;
3. The numbers only are symbolic: no need to make any calculations.

The numbers 1 through 9 can be ordered at 362,880 ways.
This is the result of 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5 x 6 x 7 x 8 x 9.
Only one of this sequences is the natural sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

For the solving of a Sudoku various techniques and strategies are available.

But before applying these techniques and strategies it is advisable to make a short analysis of the composition of the Sudoku puzzle to be solved for the determining actors mentioned above.

The more numbers in a group already given, the greater the chance that you can deduce, by pure logic and good reasoning, one or more missing numbers of this group.
Also, the higher the number of a specific number already given in the various groups, the higher the chance that you will deduce one or more missing numbers of this specific number in the group(s) that do not have this specific number.

Examples of techniques/strategies to solve a Sudoku are:
1: detecting single numbers 
2: analyzing blocks
3: combination of strategies 1 and 2
4: looking for the only number missing
5: solving a Sudoku with help of candidate numbers:
    - naked and hidden singles;
    - naked and hidden pairs;
    - naked and hidden triplets.
6: column or row interactions with blocks
7: isolating of a number in a row or a column:
    - X-Wing;
    - Swordfish;
    - XY-Wing;
    - XYZ-Wing.
8: chain interactions:
    - forcing chain;
    - X-chain;
    - Y-chain.
