Comparing HDPE And PVC Piping

Plastic piping has been used for over 60 years in a wide variety of applications. It is significantly easier to work with than traditional metal piping and can be used almost anywhere metal is and some places it cannot. There are two types of plastic piping, PVC and HDPE. If you are getting ready to begin a project that involves plumbing it may benefit you to understand the differences between the two.

PVC is a rigid plastic pipe. This makes it strong but also somewhat brittle. It can be manufactured in long lengths and large diameter making it ideal for buried piping. It can withstand large temperature extremes, all the way down to -40 degrees Celsius.

Because of the unique properties of this plastic it is remarkable resistant to corrosion of any kind. The rate of flow through these pipes will never be slowed by the build up of scale or rust. It does however scratch fairly easily. This means that flow may be slowed by debris snagging on rough, scratched surfaces.

HDPE is just as strong as PVC but without the rigidity. This flexibility means that this type of piping cam be used in many different schemes and it can be used in areas with heavy vibrations without fear of it springing leaks. It can be used in warm environments but it does not stand up to temperatures below zero.

It is as resistant to rust and corrosion as PVC but does not scratch very easily. This reduces the chances of a clog due to build up of debris. The interiors of these pipes will stay smooth keeping the flow rate high.

Another important difference between these two types of plastic piping is the impact they have on the environment. PVC is seen to be damaging to the environment because both dioxin and chlorine are used in it manufacture. Both of these are proven carcinogens. HDPE is made with much more environmentally friendly compounds and so is favored by environmentalists.

Both PVC and HDPE piping can be used effectively in a variety of situations. Take the time to find out the strengths and weaknesses of each and compare it to the projects needs. After doing that you should be able to rest assured that you have chosen the best piping for the job.
