you only need to do HIIT 2-3x a week. when you exercise at maximum effort you have to give the central nervous system time to recover from exercise. it takes the CNS longer to recover from high intensity exercise than does skeletal muscle.

Fitness Advice : Types of Resistance Training
Do you consider fitness swimming more cardio or resistance training?
I'm a female and I currently do 1 hour of resistance training 1 or 2 times a week. I used to do it 3 times a week, but since I started swimming, I have cut back on resistance training since it seems that swimming incorporates both cardio and resistance. I currently swim about 1800 yards three times a week. Do I need to do more resistance training or does this seem like enough for a balanced programme. ( I play ice hockey on Saturdays)
Swimming is a mix of both cardio and resistance training, however, it is important to continue a resistance training program on dry land. It will help to increase bone density which can be lost in the pool since you are not using all of your body weight, and to strengthen your muscles even more. If you want to increase your resistance training in the pool, you could use bouys, paddles, swimming chutes, or stretchchords.
