Coaching 6-8 Year Olds For Soccer?
For my soccer academy coaching course we have to make a drill designed for 6-8 year olds that will last about 10-15 minutes. I have to do "Stopping/Controlling the ball" but i can't think of anything that will last that long. Any idea's?
A good small sided drill that focuses on this skill area is variations of "red light, green light."
Set up a 10yd x 10yd area.
A couple ways of playing are:
Have the players dribble around the area. When you hold up a red card, cone or something similar they must stop where they are with the ball under control. Green of course would mean go, you could add in other colors to work other skills as well, such as blue to have them go in the opposite direction.
Another method or game you could transition into would be to give them the goal of making it from one side of the area to the other under the same type of conditions. Anyone caught moving under a red has to go back to the beginning. Or rather than using items, you could simply allow them to creep forward when your back is turned and stop when you are facing them.
Both games could also be controlled using verbal signals instead of visual ones. I like trying to force them to keep their heads up while training and try to not use verbal cues.
Good luck
